Windows XP - Upgrade or not?

Q. I hear a lot about Windows XP. Should I upgrade my computer so I have the latest and greatest operating system?

A. Although WinXP has a lot to offer, I am cautious about recommending an upgrade. Why is that? The main reason is that most users don’t need a new operating system. WinME and Win98SE are capable and fairly competent platforms from which you can launch most applications you use. So what if it is missing a few gimmicks. As long as your current OS supports what you are doing, you have no reason to upgrade.

Two other concerns for are cost and whether or not your computer will handle the new operating system. Upgrade versions of XP range from $99.00 for Home Edition and $199.00 for Professional. Then at minimum, you must consider the capability of your machine. XP’s minimum system requirements are: 233MHz processor, 64MB of Ram, 1.5 GB available on your hard drive, 800 x 600 display resolution, and a CD Rom drive.

If your computer meets these requirements and you install XP, you will notice a big reduction in performance. It will run on the above machine, but not run well. Then you have to make sure all of your previously installed software is compatible with XP. Imagine installing XP, only to find out that most of your applications have to be either reinstalled, or will not work at all. Too much hassle for my tastes.

Remember the old saying… If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
