Q. How can I optimize my display settings?

A. Increasing your video resolution and color quality can drastically improve your computing experience. These setting changes will alter the quality of items you view as well as the quantity, resulting in an expanded Desktop area.

To change your resolution, right-click an empty spot on your Desktop and click Properties. Choose the Settings tab, an in the Screen Resolution section (in WinXP) or the Screen Area section (in WinME and Win98 SE), move the slider to the next available option. For example, if your resolution is currently 800 x 600 pixels, increase it to 1,024 x 768 pixels. This will increase the size of your desktop area, but it will also decrease the size of icons and other Desktop items. Click Apply to test the new resolution. On the Settings tab, you’ll also find a section named Color Quality (WinXP) or Colors (WinME and Win98 SE).

Higher color settings result in richer visuals. Most modern computers can handle the highest color setting available, so select the 32-bit option from the drop down menu if it’s available. Click Apply to test the new setting. When you finish altering your display settings, click OK.

Q. I changed my display settings and now the icon descriptions are too hard to read. How do I fix this?

A. When you increase your resolution, Desktop items-including text-shrink, sometimes to the point that they are difficult to read. To remedy this problem, right-click an empty spot on your Desktop and choose the Appearance tab. In WinXP, click the Advanced button and select Icon from the Item drop-down menu. Then, next to the Font drop-down menu, select a larger font size from the Size drop-down menu and click OK. In WinME and Win98 SE, you’ll find the same drop-down menus mentioned in the previous paragraph on the Appearance tab. Select your preferences and click OK.
