Digital Cameras - The Lowdown
Q. Which camera should I buy?
A. Asking which camera you should buy is like asking what should my favorite color be. The answer is entirely based on personal preference. The only person who can answer that question is you! Your friends, neighbors, co-workers, and relatives can offer advice or opinions that are worth considering, but you will have to decide for yourself. Fortunately, you can make an informed decision without spending an inordinate amount of time researching it. The most important thing is to decide WHAT you want to use the camera for. Then you can begin to narrow the choices based on the technical overview of the different products. What works best for the person taking pictures of a sporting event might not work the same for the person taking pictures indoors of their children. Q. What is the difference between optical and digital zoom? A. The difference between optical zoom and digital zoom is like the difference between a movie that is filmed on location and a movie filmed in front of a painted set. One is real and the other isn’t. More to the point, optical zoom involves a telescopic lens that actually magnifies the subject. Digital zoom, on the other hand, requires software that artificially enhances the image so that it appears to be a detailed close-up. How does it do that? The software essentially creates new data by examining the existing data and doing some mathematical guesswork. An image enhanced digitally may turn out looking just like an optically zoomed image. Then again, it may not. If you know you need to take lots of close-ups, stick with a camera that offers the optical zoom technology. Previous Article: Faster Hard Drive = Faster System? |
