Discharge your batteries for a longer life expectancy
Q. I keep my laptop plugged in all the time. I went to use it on the battery
the other day and it wouldn't work. Shouldn't my battery be fully charged if
it is always plugged in?
A. There are several things you must take into account here. First, if your battery is made of Nickel-Cadmium or Nickel-Metal Hydride, you may have ruined the battery by leaving it plugged in all the time. Batteries like these need to be "exercised". By periodically discharging your batteries and then recharging them, you keep the capacity optimized. Second, batteries have a life expectancy of 2-3 years or around 350 to 500 charge cycles. Each time you charge your battery it loses a little of its capacity. Battery charging can be sort of a balancing act, but if done properly you will maximize your laptop experience.
