Update Your Anitvirus Program

In considering the New Year, one of the things I would like for all of you to do is consider the state of your antivirus program on your computer. One of the most common things I run into is a person with a virus on their computer. Most of the time the reaction is the same, "But I have an antivirus, how did I get a virus?" Most of the time the answer is the same, the program was just not kept up to date.

Antivirus programs are software programs designed to keep your computer free of viruses as much as possible. Just like any other software, they sometimes need updates to correct a glitch or something that has been discovered by the Manufacturer. Just as, if not more important, is the virus definitions need to be updated. What are these you ask?

Virus definitions are much like the wanted posters that law enforcement might use. They describe for the antivirus program what the virus looks like, how it behaves, and how to deal with it. Hundreds of new viruses appear each week and if you don't keep your PC up to date, you will likely fall victim to one of these in the future, if you haven't already.

Here's the deal, you normally can update your antivirus software for up to a year after installation. If yours came installed on your PC, you may have only had 90 days. After that, you have to renew your subscription or purchase a newer version of the software. The option I like the best is to buy the latest version of the software. First of all you get a new year full of free updates, but you also get the latest and greatest of the antivirus software. If you do purchase new software, make sure you uninstall the old version first before installing your new one.

So think back, how long ago did you install that antivirus software? Have you been ignoring those "Your subscription has expired!" warnings? Don't delay! Protect your PC and your data. Get updated right away.
